Vintage Suitcase Pedalboard Case Trio
2024
Trio of custom guitar effect cases made from stylish vintage suitcases.
I've been a big fan of custom fitted cases for a long time. I think it goes all the way back to getting carrying cases for my Nintendo Game Boys as a kid. Ever since, I've always tried to make sure that my electronics and other sensitive items are safe on the go. Unfortunately, not every item has off the shelf options, so I learned to take matters into my own hands on many occasions. I've become so accustomed to doing them myself that I often make my own even if there's a commercial option, and I try to use as much recycled material as I can! Here, I've made a trio of old suitcases and briefcases into custom pedalboard cases.
For the smallest, I added a small strip of foam to the bottom to keep it from sliding, and I completely filled the lid with foam for a snug fit. It turned out that width-wise, this was a perfect fit for the small one-row pedalboard. There is some room for a few additional pedals as well.
The medium case was another great fit, this time for my medium pedalboard. The only major modification was removing the paper and pen organizer pouch by drilling out the rivets, turning it into a more plain box. With one direct-in box on either side of the pedalboard, it fits like a glove. I just decided to put a little padding against the hinge for impact protection. A small piece is added to the top to make sure there's no rattling. This one is currently being used for storage only, so no cables are installed, allowing more pedals to be crammed in.
Lastly, the large case needed the least work. I found that the cloth-on-frame retention system worked really well at holding the pedalboard snugly without any modifications. Even better, it only used half of the case, allowing for ample storage on the other side.
I'm very happy with how these cases turned out. I was able to find good size matches for the objects, and they offer a handsome, vintage look. I think their ambiguous appearance also obscures the expensive items within, making them less of a theft target.
