Peavy Classic 50 Amplifier Chassis and Reverb Upgrades

2024

Safety, quality of life, and sonic upgrades for 1990s American made tube amplifier.

I bought this Peavey Classic 50 in good physical condition despite its thirty years of age. I got a great deal on it because of some fixable electrical issues, which wouldn't be a concern to me until I wanted to try and play the amp live on stage. In the short term, I had a few upgrades I wanted to make. The first order of business was to install some caster wheels on it, as this thing is quite heavy! Inspired by my other amplifier, the Roland JC-120, I decided to install pop-out casters. They are easy to replace if the wheels get damaged, and are very convenient if the amp is on an uneven surface and starts to roll away. I really like forstner bits for drilling large holes. I first used one to drill 30mm holes for an arcade machine control panel, and I was immediately impressed by how clean and smooth the holes turned out, especially in plywood, which is prone to chipping. The 5/8" forstner performed beautifully, and before long, I had the caster sockets installed. While I was at it, I decided to replace the tired old rubber feet with some fresh ones. The next order of business was to replace the power cord. A previous owner had the briliant idea of snapping the ground prong off of the power cord to use it on two-prong outlets. Thankfully, a fresh cord is easily sourced at any hardware store. Working on and using this amp feels much safer after being properly grounded. The last in this round of mods is changing the spring reverb pan. I really like ambient and surf rock music, so I wanted to upgrade to a long decay reverb. I removed the internal connector from the original pan and soldered it to the new RCA cables and protected everything with heat shrink. After plugging the new pan in, the last order of business was to put new shock mounts on it for good noise isolation and reattach it inside the chassis. The upgraded pan from MOD allows one to get huge, cavernous reverberation, exactly what I was looking for. All in all, these small upgrades made it much more pleasant to use this amp and are a great foundation for many future years of use.
