Custom Painted Nike Dunks Rescue
2018
Custom Painted Nike Dunk shoes using vinyl dye spray. Found this abandoned project at the thrift store and gave the pair of shoes new life as a mixed black and white pair.
I discovered this pair of new all-white Nike Dunk SB hi tops in my size at the thrift store at a great price. There was only one catch: one of the shoes had an odd custom paint job that appeared to be unfinished. I was hoping to use them as skate shoes, so their appearance didn't have to be perfect. I decided to take a gamble on it.
My first idea was to see if I could wipe off the paint. Using some acetone and cotton pads, I got to work on it. I could get a majority of it off, but unfortunately, it was still obvious against the bright white background that there was still some left, especially in the stitching and seams.
The next idea was to paint it a different color. I had some success in the past using a special spray to change the color of some car seats, so I went down to AutoZone and got a can of vinyl dye. It is designed to stay flexible and not transfer to clothes, so I figured it might be well-suited for this, provided it had good adhesion. I started with the painted shoe, masking off the sole area, and applied a couple of coats. The black went on smoothly, and gave a very deep and uniform black. So far, so good! I scraped it in an inconspicuous area to see if it was durable. It showed no signs of coming off, so I would call that a big success!
After seeing the mismatched pair sitting next to each other, I decided it would be much more fun to leave the other shoe bright white. I had thought about buying two identical pairs of shoes in different colors to mix and match them many times, but I had never gone through with it. And here the opportunity was staring me in the face, for no extra cost. It was a no-brainer!
I ended up skating these shoes for a long time. The cup sole on Nike basketball shoes is pretty long-lasting, so I ended up adding some hard leather patches on the key wear areas, and they lasted me nearly a year of skateboarding. I would recommend this spray to anyone who wants to change the color of their leather sneakers.
