AionFX Straylight Uni-Vibe Pedal PCB Build

2025

Build of complex guitar effect from premade PCB and parts list. Custom made and decorated enclosure.

Uni-vibe is one of the oldest guitar effects, released in 1967. Famously used by Jimi Hendrix and many others, it is a very unique circuit that contains elements of chorus and vibrato, but it most accurately be described as a phaser. It owes its uniquely swirling and surging sound to its unique LFO, driven by a tiny incandescent light bulb being picked up by light dependent resistors. Being such and old and famous effect, original units fetch eye watering prices on the used market, over $5000. Being this complicated, authentic recreations of this circuit are few and far between, and also tend to be quite expensive, the most popular versions going for over $300. This led me to explore my DIY options. Thankfully, AionFX offers a PCB and build plans for only $16, with a complete bill of materials running around $150. AionFX provides excellent build notes and even instructs you how to import the parts list into mouser electronics, which is very helpful, considering there are 130 parts. However, there are not step-by step instructions, so you need to be comfortable populating the PCB on your own based on a parts list and drill the enclosure yourself with a provided template. This was by far the most complicated pedal I've ever built, and I am glad to say that it went off with very few snags thanks to the clear documentation. I decided to do a simple black case with Dymo embossed labels for a classic DIY look, but I would like to make a custom printed enclosure if I use this effect in the long term.
